Peeing
(in your tent)
Yes, we all pee. Now, imagine yourself comfortably in your tent in the middle of the night and its freezing outside...well...you may be so inclined to just pee in a bottle. But is this the best way to pee in your tent? Let's talk about it.
What doesn't work:
I've tried many solutions, and if you want the best one, just scroll down. But those looking for a short story, here it is:
- My first year I used a 5 gallon bucket outside my tent. I thought this was brilliant until my neighbors for some reason were not so cool about having ~4 gallons of piss in a bucket outside my tent. Okay, lesson learned. This is not a good solution.
- My second year I pissed in 1 gallon jugs. This worked okay, but it was pretty gross peeing in a jug that already had piss in it, especially days old. This is not a good solution.
- My third year, I was too grossed out after peeing in 1 gallon buckets the prior year and decided I am not going to pee in my tent. I had to walk to the bathroom even when I was already comfortable in my warm sleeping bag. This is not a good solution.
- My 4th year, I finally found a great solution by asking a friend of mine who is a Navy jet pilot how he pees on long flights. Surely if it is good enough for Top Gun, it is good enough for me at the burn.
How Jet Pilots Piss: Piddle Packs
This simple invention is a small plastic pouch filled with Water Beads, which expand 1000x their size when they come in contact with water, like you would find in a diaper. The pouch has a built-in funnel, and after you pee in it and your pee turns into gel, the funnel also holds back the gel so it stays in the pouch.
Within about 30 seconds of peeing in the pouch, everything is (mostly) solid and you can just toss it in your trash bag. While it does produce some extra plastic, I only use this for one week of the year (on the playa) and about once a day.
This solution is quick and sanitary. You can even bring one of these out with you and instead of peeing on the playa (don't do it!) you can use your piddle pack as an emergency solution.
There are piddle packs designs that work for both men and women, wahoo!
Water Crystals
I ended up buying some very inexpensive "piddle packs" so I also bought extra water crystals which I just poured into the piddle pack before to make sure it was extremely absorbent. If you buy a brand name piddle pack, you won't need these extra water crystals.
